OUR WORKS WILL GO THROUGH THE FIRE BOOK
Chapter Three - Our Works Will Go Through the Fire Book
THE WORKS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
God gave man a promise that one day He would put His Spirit within us. This prophecy was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Jesus was saying that it’s more important for us to have the Holy Spirit in us than to have Himself with us on earth.
Very few people are acquainted with the Holy Spirit as a person so I want to review some of His personality traits and His titles before we delve into His works.
We need to learn to talk to the Holy Spirit because He has a will of His own. We need to praise and worship Him and celebrate His presence in our lives.
The Holy Spirit is a Spirit, like God the Father and He is a person with a personality of His won. He has a mind and He has an opinion about everything that concerns us. He has emotions because when we offend Him He withdraws from us. When He withdraws He takes His fruits with Him. If we don’t have the evidence of His fruits in our lives it could be because we are offending the fruit Bearer.
Are you flowing in love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, and temperance? If you aren’t flowing in the gifts of the Holy Spirit then stop grieving, quenching, offending, or resisting the Holy Spirit.
In His presence there is love. In His presence there is fullness of joy. In His presence there is peace that passes all understanding. In the presence of the Holy Spirit there is longsuffering that will endure and overcome the worst storms of life. In His presence there is gentleness and goodness. In His presence there is faithfulness to God and to others. In the presence of the Holy Spirit there is meekness (humility) that will cause us to inherit the earth. In His presence there is temperance (self-control) that will cause our flesh to bow, our emotions to bow, our minds to bow and our will to bow under the mighty hand of God.
The Holy Spirit is known by a variety of names: (1) Spirit of God, (2) Spirit of Christ, (3) Comforter, (4) Abiding Guest, (5) Teacher, (6) Testifier, (7) Reprover, (8) Voice of God, (9) Prophet, (10) Glorifier, (11) Exhibitor, (12) Spiritual Dynamo, (13) Solicitor, (14) Helper in prayer, (15) Witness to Sonship, (16) Guide, and (17) Remembrancer.
John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me.
The Holy Spirit has been sent to testify (be a testimony) of the demonstrated works of Jesus. He is a testifier of Christ and He exhorts and exalts Christ. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and He provides strength, courage, wisdom, and grace. When we are grieving or lonely He spends time with us and binds up our wounds.
He produces Christ-fruits. He demonstrates in us the character and nature of God and Christ. He disciplines and reveals the truth.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
He teaches us those things that the Father and Son have already said in the Bible. Truth is revealed through His training. When we are ministering to others the Holy Spirit is the One who brings the Word of God to our memory. We are then able to quote the word in season and out of season.
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He is our teacher and guide who directs our paths of righteousness and He reveals the secrets and mysteries of God that are about to come to pass.
In the Holy Spirit rests the blazing fire of the purity and holiness of Almighty God. He imparts Christ-life and the power to live a holy, unblemished life of righteousness. He reveals the things of Christ. Jesus walked in the perfect example that man should strive to imitate. As we learn the mystery of Christ and the secret of success of His life, we are empowered to walk in that same manner and partake of that same victory.
He imparts the power of Christ through the baptism. The Holy Spirit takes the place of Christ in the earth. He is a servant of God and is content to serve in this hidden subordinate capacity.
The Holy Spirit replaces Christ as our personal friend, teacher, companion, and guide. He quickens our mortal bodies. He holds us up when we are weak. He makes us competent ministers. The Holy Spirit carries us along in the perfect will of God. He cast out demons. He anoints us.
Romans 8:14,16 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.
When we are caught up in the move of the Holy Spirit and goose bumps or electrical sensations begin surging through our bodies this is God’s Spirit witnessing to our human spirit. We feel the Spirit come upon us or pass over us, in our flesh but our spirit knows it is God’s power resting upon us.
Being led by the Spirit and not by our own means is proof that we are the sons of God.
Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
The Holy Spirit sanctifies us and cuts out the old and puts in the new. He separates us from that which harms us. He witnesses to us and through us in ministry. He commands in spiritual warfare. He helps our infirmities and prays through us when we have prayed every way we know how to and nothing works. He intercedes for the saints. While Jesus is in heaven praying for us, the Holy Spirit is in the earth praying through us.
I Corinthians 2:10-11 But God hath revealed them unto us by the Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea the deep things of God.
For what man knoweth the things of man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
The Holy Spirit searches the deep unrevealed, mysteries of God.
Acts 16:6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia.
The Holy Spirit commands and directs our paths.
Acts 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost and to keep back part of the price of the land?
He is susceptible to personal treatment. He can be lied to. He can be resisted, blasphemed, grieved, quenched, and offended.
Acts 7:51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
Matthew 12:31-32 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
And whosoever speaketh a word a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
The Holy Spirit can be blasphemed against but there is no forgiveness for blaspheming Him.
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
He can be grieved and then He will withdraw from us.
I Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.
He can be quenched by our acts of disobedience to God.
John 16:8-11 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
He uncovers and condemns sin. This is His major ministry of works.
Divine works have been ascribed to the Holy Spirit.
Genesis 1:2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
The Holy Spirit shared in the creation of the world. He was brooding or sperming the area that God’s spoken word was about to conceive and birth new worlds.
Genesis 6:3 And the man said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh; yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
The Holy Spirit strives with sinners.
John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
He creates new creatures in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
He raised Christ from the dead and will one day raise each of us from the dead or He will transport us into the presence of God through translation.
Either way, our physical bodies will be changed before we leave the atmosphere of planet earth. The human body could not stand the intense pressure of flying through space at warp speed.
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are constantly at work concerning our lives. When we communicate with One of them we are communicating with all Three of them because we are in their presence. We communicate with God the Father through praying in our human understanding. We communicate with God the Son through the study of the Word. We fellowship with God the Holy Spirit through praying in tongues.
I Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
In Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead), continues to dwell in bodily form giving complete expression of the divine nature. We are in Him, made full and have come to fullness of life.
In Christ we too are filled with the Godhead: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and reach full spiritual stature. He is the head of all rule and authority of every angelic principality and power. The full power of the Trinity is working in our lives.
Our Father loved the world and sent Jesus His Son. Jesus paid our debt that we might be justified in the presence of God. The Holy Spirit gives us power to do exploits in this life. The Trinity is constantly doing a work in the bride of Christ.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
Jesus commanded us to be baptized in the name of all Three of the Godhead in order to recognize the work of all Three in the salvation plan. There is only one God but He has three different names and personalities.
This verse proves that we are not to be baptized only in the name of Jesus. The early church’s formula for baptism was not in the name of Jesus only.
